For most people the best way to do a cleanse is to EAT food with your juice or smoothie.
This is important so that as your body is detoxifying the toxins have something to bind to in-order-to pull them out of your body (otherwise you may re-absorb them).
A gentle cleanse is better than one that makes you feel like you have the flu. The way to minimize adverse effects is to prep for the cleanse by avoiding certain foods before —up to a week is ideal, but even one day will be helpful.

Be sure to consult with your physician before participating in a cleanse if you have any health issues, and know that there are always inherent health risks with any dietary changes.

What else to drink during the cleanse
Lemon juice. Warm water with lemon first thing in the morning is an incredible liver stimulant that begins the cleansing process before you even have your first sip of juice.
Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar (with the Mother in it) aka ACV ACV also works to detoxify the liver. A great way to get this in is to add a tablespoon to a glass of water and some stevia or honey for a “lemonade” type drink.
